Try playing with SLOU Seersucker Popover
I received a lot of wonderful shirts this summer. Just when I told myself enough was enough, Will from SLOU offered to send me a seersucker popover…and my thirst for a good summer shirt is insatiable. You get the idea. I looked at the collar and thought it was worth playing with.
Since then, I’ve put together two casual outfits and two not-so-casual outfits. Popovers aren’t usually meant to be pushed in, but I felt it was worth a try. I’m starting to get a feel for the shirt, and I’m thinking about how I’m going to wear it in the future… so let’s take a look at it one by one.
The first outfit I wore to visit a friend at the Instagram office in New York was also my first outfit with ALD Rainers. Inspired by the first ad ALD used, I was actually kind of excited to wear them with shorts. Obviously, my outfit isn’t that gorgeous, lacking layers and socks…but it was hot outside, so I’m happy with how I turned out. I love the color combination and everything.
And this might be my favorite shirt usage example. Wear it over shorts for a carefree summer vibe. The sleeves roll up nicely. The one-button setup is spacious and breezy, yet spins cleanly.
So I wanted to try casual tailoring. The outfit was simple, with a pair of slim chinos to keep things organized…easy? I don’t know, I just wanted to take off these chinos.
It definitely works. The highlight is the stunning collar roll with two buttons.
But I prefer shirts in the first context for two reasons. One is that the sleeves are long. I’m a short guy and Will said popovers need to be relaxed and would shrink a bit when tumble dried, so I decided to size up for this shirt. I thought – I’m going to wear this shirt to the pool, I’m going to wear it in the heat and sweat, I don’t want to worry about it every time I wash it, I just like the relaxed fit, even if I size up. It might be good. After tumble drying: The fabric is still great and the fit is nice and relaxed (though the neck is perfect). However, the sleeves are still just long for me.
More importantly…I don’t like the way the seersucker tucks. Seersucker is crunchy and has a certain degree of hardness. It’s great if you know how to use it, but I don’t like the look around the waistband. The waistband is soft and has no drape. This stiffness prevents the sleeves from bunching up at the top of the sleeve… which it actually does I wanted it When you put on the jacket, the sleeves will hide it and no one will notice that the sleeves are too long. I have no choice.
Go back to casual clothes. Zero buttons is the loosest shirt, so compare it to the loosest pants and loosest jacket. The collar still looks nice. The shirt is still long, so I think it would be a little better if it was a little shorter. There was more distance between the shirt and the hem of the jacket, but without the jacket, that length only adds to the sloppiness, so I’m not too upset.
Side note: Wear this instead of a T-shirt on hot days. This will help you breathe 100 times better.
I decided to try it with a tie. I still don’t like the tuck or sleeve length, but the collar frames the tie wonderful Be nice. (I also like how the seersucker sits when the collar is open, but the fit wasn’t quite right to show it).
I’m looking forward to SLOU’s next button down. do If I tuck it in, you’ll probably see me in a tie more often. (Note: Will says the next shirt might be shorter too…I’m excited).
Other than the tuck and sleeve length, I really like the fit. Slouchy yet classic summer style. My blue suede Alden tassel also fit perfectly!
Overall, yes, I love this shirt, but I prefer it untucked. Breathable, roomy, light and crisp… everything a seersucker popover can be. If you’re looking for a simple, casual summer shirt, this is a great option.
