Pitti Uomo’s Power Play – Why should women be silenced in the media?
The Pitti Uomo 108, held in Florence, Italy from June 17th to 20th, 2025, was a spectacular sight of men’s wear excellence, innovation and heritage. With over 30% of exhibitors from outside Italy (45% from outside Italy), the event attracted global attention and once again solidified its role as the cornerstone of international men’s fashion.
But under the appeal of high-end fashion revitalization, something much more elegant is unfolding. Gracie Oplanza, the founder of the respected men-style fashion platform and a veteran of fashion coverage for a decade, was unfairly discriminated against in a deeply troubling incident that unfolded in a media restaurant.

Who is funding Pitti Umo?
Pitti Uomo operates under Pitti Immagine, a non-profit organization funded by multiple streams.
- Main Partner: UnicRedit, supporting sustainability and innovation initiatives at the event.
- Institutional support: Special grants from Maeci (Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs) and Agenzia Ice.
- Public interests: Municipality of Florence, the Tuscany Region, and Centro di Florence are La Moda Italiana.
- Media and Brand Sponsorship: Collaboration with fashion giants and international media enhances both fame and exposure.
Brands like us. The show celebrated its 135 years of heritage and hosted a VIP event at an iconic Florence venue like the Santa Maria Novela. Issey Miyake’s Homme Plissé won center stage as Guest of Honor, with Post Archive Faction and Niccolò Pasqualetti highlighting their commitment to fashion’s global and emerging voices.
Gracie Opulanza discrimination: The press crisis unfolds
Despite being a journalist and digital publisher with a global follower, Gracie Oplanza was denied access to the Press restaurant. When she raised questions about the sudden change in press access, she was suddenly and rudely fired by the Press’ Ilaria Director and handed over to a contractor named William.
Instead of addressing concerns about professionalism, the incident escalated. Gracie was told by staff that Ilaria and Lisa are the only directors of the press, and that William should never intervene. However, when the matter caught the attention of the Pitti Imagine director rather than investigating the facts, he sided with the contractor and banned Gracie from the event entirely.
The decision was made without formal hearing, review of evidence, or verification of her media qualification, which has been used to defend European menswear for over a decade.
The lack of due process and silence from senior leaders is not merely oversight, but institutional discrimination.
Why is this important?
Fashion takes pride in diversity, creativity and openness. Pitti Uomo’s own story promotes innovation, sustainability and internationalism. However, if women challenge protocols for fair access and are publicly humiliated and prohibited without reason, this undermines the principles of claims supported by Pitti Imagine.
It also sends a clear message. Long-standing media voices, especially independent voices led by women, can be discarded when inconvenient.
Gracie Opulanza has been with Pitti Uomo since 2019, giving small brands global visibility, bringing attention to emerging trends and capturing Florence’s energy through digital storytelling.
Being expelled without explanation or apology is a smudge of Pitti Imagine’s reliability.
Calling for Accountability
Fashion is not just about clothes, it is about people, voices, and expressions.
If Pitti Immagine truly represents inclusiveness and innovation, then we need to publicly address this discrimination, issue a formal apology to Gracie Opulanza and review the internal decision-making process that has enabled such an incident to occur.
Events like Pitti Uomo thrive in international media. Silence of those who hold them to explain them sets a dangerous precedent.
Until justice is provided, this story remains a cautionary tale of what happens when access, ego, and poor judgment clash in a luxurious way.
